Some of the DBS staff celebrated the holiday season with Hal.

Hal dedicated over two decades of his life to DBS Interactive, playing a pivotal role in guiding us through the rapid technological advancements that shaped our industry.

He was instrumental in ensuring the digital safety and security of both our company and our clients.

His technical prowess positioned DBS Interactive as a global leader in web best practices.

But make no mistake, Hal’s kindness and warm spirit matched his technical acumen.

His presence was a constant source of inspiration and support for me and everyone who had the privilege of working with him. Hal was not just a colleague; he was a friend, a mentor, and a guiding light.

He will always be an integral part of the fabric of DBS, and his absence will be profoundly felt.

Nothing could eclipse Hal, except maybe the 2024 eclipse.

Despite the debilitating neurological disorder, he continued to shepherd the technical team since his diagnosis.

That’s who he was.

Hal had a deep love for music, particularly his generational icon Bob Dylan, and the soulful tunes of Sonny Boy Williamson II, Mississippi John Hurt, and Muddy Waters.

His sharp wit and wry sense of humor were evident in his favorite quotes, including W.C. Fields’ epitaph: "All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia," and Oscar Wilde’s final remark: "Either this wallpaper goes, or I do."

A proud alumnus of Vanderbilt University, Hal was active in organizations that reflected his commitment to peace and justice.

His quiet demeanor belied a depth of thought and compassion that touched everyone he met.

Cooper knew just where to go for attention and a belly rub.

One of Hal's close bonds was with Cooper, our spirited and friendly Chief Canine Officer. Hal and Cooper's daily walks through downtown Louisville were legendary, with Cooper often stealing the spotlight with his infectious energy.

Hal once remarked, "Cooper was even more popular than me on our walks, but I didn’t mind. He was fun and had an infectious energy, and everyone always loved seeing him."

Despite the challenges of ALS, Hal remained a steadfast leader, ensuring DBS navigated through every storm with resilience and grace.

Bob Dylan's timeless lyrics from "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" resonate deeply as we reflect on Hal's journey. Hal, we will miss you profoundly.

Rest now, Hal. You will forever remain in our hearts and memories.

Peace.

He kept an eye on network activity, and his off-site apartment featured a window so he could see the people and things at the front door.
